Durban Dialogues Dissected
0This volume provides an in-depth analysis of the work of Indian South African playwright Ashwin Singh, which, through the diversity of characters from all ethnic backgrounds, forges an inclusive South African identity. The essays in this volume show how SinghOs plays bring South AfricaOs blatant prejudices and social ills to the forefront as only by confronting unpleasant realities can any far-reaching changes actually take place. The academics and cultural practitioners who have contributed to this volume approach SinghOs work from a variety of angles, ranging from history, psychology and experimental literary forms to the performance of the plays, the relevance of the stage directions and the symbiotic relationship between the playwright and the director. The contrast between the climate of optimistic political protest and the complacency and disillusion of the new democratic era is seen to reassess the actions of the past in the light of present outcomes.

Gender and Sexuality in South African Music
0During the past two decades, the study of sexuality and gender in music has become a decidedly mainstream activity. To be sure, music has long been obviously and intimately involved in matters pertaining to relations, both sexual and otherwise, between and amongst the sexes. Its use in courtship is the one that perhaps first comes to mind, this use being probably as old as music itself.
This book contains all the papers presented at the conference by the same name.

Listening to Literature
0OI think Listening to Literature promises to be a major contribution towards a clearer understanding of our literature as seen and understood from within its dynamic cultural context. It has the potential of being a rare and crucial intervention in the development of literature and literary criticism in South Africa. That also applies to the illuminating of points of intersection of, and interaction between literary art and aspects of other forms of artistic expression.O
