The ways in which the department currently operates are deemed fundamentally joined to its past and pave the way for the evolution of geography and its various subdisciplines going forward. The investigation seeks to highlight the development of the discipline and its institutionalisation as part of the academic offerings of the university, while providing details about the teaching and research conducted, as well as of the people who contributed to these endeavours. It also furnishes the academic geography community at Stellenbosch, and geography more broadly, with some insights into its past development and more recent changes, along with a complete bibliography of conducted research.

A Composer in Africa
0Stefans Grove (*1922), regarded by many as Africas greatest living composer, possesses one of the most distinctive compositional voices of our time. He studied in Cape Town under Erik Chisholm before becoming the first South African to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship.
He took his Masters at Harvard under Walter Piston, attended Aaron Coplands composition class at the Tanglewood Summer School, and subsequently taught for over a decade at the renowned Peabody Institute in Baltimore before returning to his African roots in the early 1970s.

A Far-Away War
0South Africa’s armed forces invaded Angola in 1975, setting off a war that had consequences for the whole region that are still felt today. A Far-Away War contributes to a wider understanding of this war in Angola and Namibia. The book does not only look at the war from an “e;old”e; South African (Defence Force) perspective, but also gives a voice to participants “e;on the other side”e; – emphasising the role of the Cubans and Russians. This focus is supplemented by the inclusion of many never-before-published photographs from Cuban and Russian archives, and a comprehensive bibliography.
